Optical Recognition Engine
Panini is pleased to inform you on the release of two important software
tools which add value to our My Vision X series with the capability to
recognize image OCR and Barcode data. Both recognition engines work on
images captured by the My Vision X unit and are now available as options
to the machine configuration. They come fully integrated with our Panini
Vision API. This means, a quick and easy access to their use and to the
software integration and development process.
Both engines also take full advantage of the Panini ICR Vision Software
available all across our Vision Series and included within the My Vision
X image sub system. They can in fact, effectively work on the snippets
extracted from the image captured and provided by the ICR Vision
Software (see our M.B.014).With Panini ICR Vision Software, up to 10
snippets in bitmap format can be extracted from the image (5 front and 5
rear) with ICR Vision software and then presented to the Panini My
Vision OCR and / or the Panini My Vision Barcode for recognition.
The Panini My Vision recognition engines work on bitmap in
non-compressed format grayscale and therefore, do not penalize the My
Vision X performance. The fact they do not work on a deteriorated image
means, most important, they do not run the risk of bad data
interpretation. Also, the possibly required snippets thresholding level
is adjustable independently from the dynamic thresholding function
implemented on the original image. This allows for the further advantage
to be able to tune the snippet to the best format and therefore maximize
the recognition rate results.
The Panini My Vision engines are very fast and effective and do not
affect the My Vision X processing speed. Not to mention their special
and competitive prices allows for reducing the economical impact of
implementing such important features on board.
The My Vision OCR and Barcode engines can be supplied together with the
units or they can be later upgraded via software only. These features,
as in the standard policy of our My Vision X open system policy, can
therefore be added by the client at a second stage of their project thus
protecting the investment.
Supports OCR-A, OCR-B, E13B recognition engine

Fast Color Option
Panini is proud to release FastColor, an innovative image processing
feature for the MyVision X which allows the capture of color images at
full scanner speed performance.
With FastColor images92 can be captured front and rear at 200 dpi using
full scanner DPMspeed. The color images will be available in JPEG format
for archiving purposes or BMP for color OCR recognition (color dropout).
Please note, during the same color image acquisition, a gray level (at
200 DPI) and a bitonal GR IV image can always, also, be obtained. Color
will also be available with the snippets functions of the established
Panini ICR Vision software management to quickly and effectively feed OCR
or CAR/LAR recognition engines utilizing color features.
Fast color has succeeded in providing very good performances
with difficult back grounds and writings, including gel pens. All these
features are obtained without affecting the global DPM performance of
the transport.
This is a result of sophisticated fine tuning of the speed/image quality
ratio that has been oriented to prioritize throughput, while obtaining a
good level of image quality. FastColor therefore, fully guarantees the
same speed and image resolution that can be achieved with full grayscale
images, both with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. A fundamental advantage of Panini
FastColor is the small size of the high quality color image. The size of
the JPEG image obtained through the FastColor capability,
is approximately only 30% bigger than the equivalent image captured at
256 gray levels. This remarkable result clearly opens the way for a more
intensive use of color whose requirement have always been downplayed by
the undesirable consequence of having to archive and send electronically
large image color files. Among the applications where FastColor can be
implemented, besides image archival and CAR/LAR or OCR recognition, is
for back up purposes. Since color images are captured at the same time of
gray scale or black/white images, they can be locally stored and
retrieved or remotely sent only on demand when bitonal or grayscale
images do not have the sufficient degree of readability to
perform recognition or other tasks. As a further feature, using the same
image acquisition from a bitonal GR IV image, a background dropout can
also be obtained (using red, green and blue). A dropout is a requirement
which has become increasingly important. The wider use of automatic
recognition engine for OCR, handwriting and of signature verification
software has made it increasingly important to rely on a high quality
image where back ground noise and document color frames must be removed.
Fast Color is available with version 1.6.1.2 My Vision X API, and offered
as a specific option to be purchased separately.

| CHECK SCANNERS Check 21 Compliant Scanners
|
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21) was signed into law on October 28, 2003, and became effective on October 28, 2004. Check 21 is designed to foster innovation in the payments system and to enhance its efficiency by reducing some of the legal impediments to check truncation. The law facilitates check truncation by creating a new negotiable instrument called a substitute check, which permits banks to truncate original checks, to process check information electronically, and to deliver substitute checks to banks that want to continue receiving paper checks. A substitute check is the legal equivalent of the original check and includes all the information contained on the original check. The law does not require banks to accept checks in electronic form nor does it require banks to use the new authority granted by the Act to create substitute checks.
The Federal Reserve Board has released the final rule to implement Check 21, including the model disclosure language for depository institutions to use in notifying consumers of their rights under the law.
